INTRODUCTION:
At the request of Arkopharma Laboratories, a clinical trial was performed on volunteers in order to evaluate the cutaneous efficacy and amenity in use of IN BEAUTY Skin Nutrition capsules, a dermocosmetic food supplement with moisturising and wrinkle-smoothing properties, combined with the application of a reference cream which has no effect on wrinkles when used on its own.

This trial took place over a period of six weeks, using the parallel group methodology. Examinations were made at the beginning and end of the trial with a view to evaluating the quantitative effect produced by IN BEAUTY Skin Nutrition capsules on wrinkles and skin moisturising. A questionnaire was completed at the end of the trial.

TRIAL PROTOCOL:
The trial was carried out on 29 women between the ages of 33 and 69 (mean = 47), divided into two groups of 16 (Group CG) and 13 (Group C). The subjects in both groups applied a cream, morning and evening for six weeks, on the face only.

In addition, Group CG subjects took one IN BEAUTY Skin Nutrition capsule morning and evening throughout the trial. At the consultations on Day 0 and Day 42, the following examinations were performed:

Evaluation of moisturising by corneometry of:
• the face
• the front of the left forearm
• the outer side of the left leg

Silicone elastomer impressions in order to make a profilometric study of:
• the crow’s feet
• the back of the left hand

RESULTS:
• Crow’s feet
The three-dimensional profilometric examination makes it possible to obtain a detailed representation in relief of the skin surface. A silicone impression is first taken, to obtain a “negative” of the area under study, from which a hard resin counter-impression is then made. This counter-impression, which is the image in “positive” relief of the skin site, is analysed in full detail by the profilometer’s microstylus.

The mean depth of the wrinkles (Md) can thus be measured.
These four illustrations show the change in an area of crow’s feet between the commencement and end of the trial, in two Group CG subjects. The degrees of relief, illustrated by the different colours, are clearly less at the end of treatment, as is indicated by the Md values on D0 and D42.

The two groups, C and CG, were homogeneous when taken into the study. The changes between the initial and final consultations show a significant reduction in Md in Group CG, compared with Group C.

The mean reduction in Group CG was
–8.16%, but was as high as –44% in some people.

These results provide objective evidence of the effect that IN BEAUTY Skin Nutrition capsules have on wrinkles, since the cream used on its own has no action against wrinkles.

• Profilometry of the back of the left hand

The group using cream + IN BEAUTY Skin Nutrition capsules showed an improvement in skin surface between the beginning and end of the trial.

• Moisturising
% increase in moisturising of the “face” site between D 0 and D 42 Facial skin moisturising (the area where the cream was applied) was improved in both moisturising groups, the statistical significance being higher in Group CG (+10.85%).

Mean moisturising measurement of the “forearm” site for the cream + capsules group. While it did not change significantly in Group C, forearm moisturising improved by 6% on average in Group CG.

Mean moisturising measurement of the “leg” site for the cream + capsules group.

Here again, Group CG experienced a more significant improvement in moisturising, on average 9%.

In all, improvement in moisturising for the whole of the body was more marked in Group CG. It is thus logical to attribute this result to IN BEAUTY Skin Nutrition capsules.

Qualitative Results
A questionnaire handed to each member of Group CG at the end of the trial made it possible to assess how pleasant it was to use the IN BEAUTY Skin Nutrition capsules as a supplement to the reference cream. The members were asked to award scores to certain items on a scale of 0 to 20.

Moisturising of the face and body, and skin comfort, were judged “very satisfactory”, with mean scores of 16 and 15.5 respectively; skin suppleness was also judged “very satisfactory”, with an average of 16/20. Capsule tolerance was “very satisfactory” (15.5/20) and skin tolerance of the combination IN BEAUTY Skin Nutrition Capsules + Cream was even rated “excellent” (17/20). Overall satisfaction was “very satisfactory”, as was the feeling that IN BEAUTY Skin Nutrition capsules had a good effect on the skin (both 16/20 on average).

Another questionnaire was used to evaluate satisfaction against a scale. As these diagrams show, the satisfaction index was highly positive and the beneficial action on the skin of IN BEAUTY Skin Nutrition capsules was confirmed by a majority of women taking part.

CONCLUSION:
The efficacy of IN BEAUTY Skin Nutrition capsules used to complement a cosmetic cream has thus been amply demonstrated. Their reducing action on wrinkles and their moisturising effect on the skin all over the body has been conclusively measured, and was greatly appreciated by the women taking part in this trial.

These results are supported by quality criteria, for which IN BEAUTY Skin Nutrition capsules gained maximum approval. Highest votes went to their favourable incidence on skin comfort, suppleness, softness and complexion.

IN BEAUTY Skin Nutrition thus acts like a real “Internal Cosmetic”, providing the skin naturally with all the elements essential for better balance. The capsules do not act on the face.
