The Natural Way to Live with Diabetes

Whether you have Type 1 Diabetes, where your body simply does not make insulin, or Type 2, where your body is not producing enough insulin or is not able to use the insulin it produces effectively, maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is most likely something that you are constantly aware of.

LIFESTYLE

The first step in taking control of your diabetes is to make some changes to your lifestyle. Diabetes does not usually happen for no reason: sometimes it’s not only what you ARE doing….. But what you are NOT doing that can affect your health or in this case your blood sugar levels.

ADD GREEN TO YOUR DIET

Simply avoiding sugar might not be enough (although it is the most important). Perhaps you are not eating enough green foods to help stabilise blood sugar. Chlorophyll plays a very important role in blood sugar control as do minerals. These are all supplied by our green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli. Minerals help to nourish the pancreas which is responsible for producing the insulin needed to stabilise blood sugar levels.

DON’T AVOID PROTEINS & FATS

Not eating enough protein and good fats can also play havoc with our blood sugar levels. Protein and fats, when combined with a carbohydrate, help slow the glycaemic response of the body. In other words, they help reduce a spike in blood sugar levels. This will help to reduce the chances of a crash in blood sugar levels which leaves us feeling tired and often results in a headache and poor concentration.

ADOPT BETTER EATING HABITS

Regular episodes of Hypoglycaemia can be a warning that the body is not controlling your blood sugar levels very well. Eating sugar to elevate low blood sugar levels is an outdated and uninformed way of coping and is certainly not a long-term solution. This can in fact negatively contribute to the long-term stability and control of your diabetes. Instead eat regular meals filled with a good source of protein such as fish, eggs or meat and oils such as those from avocados, flaxseeds or activated nuts (protein and oils). If you are waking up with low blood sugar levels or a headache eat a chlorophyll rich meal before bed or take a green supplement with some good oils to help keep your blood sugar levels stable throughout the night.

Make better food choices
The choice is yours…no matter how difficult!

 STRESS

Uncontrolled stress levels can cause you to make unhealthy and often emotionally based food choices over healthy and thought-out meals. Now, although regularly eating unhealthy meals low in good nutrition is obviously not good, it is instead the reason behind these poor food choices that is the biggest danger – STRESS!!! Long term stress can cause large amounts of Cortisol to be released by the adrenal glands. Cortisol has been shown to inhibit insulin production and reduce insulin sensitivity. What this means is that not enough insulin will be produced, and the insulin receptors will be less sensitive to insulin resulting in high blood sugar levels and insulin resistance.

STOP THE SNACKING

Insulin resistance can be aggravated by continuous sugar spikes, causing the insulin receptors that let sugars pass into our cells, to get worn out. Eventually, the pancreas becomes overworked as it has to release more and more insulin to try and keep the blood sugar under control.

SUPPLEMENTS

Along with healthy food choices supplements play a vital role in restoring pancreatic health and nourishing our adrenal glands to help combat the effects of diabetes.

Stress, poor eating habits and lack of exercise can all contribute towards diabetes. It is up to us to be equipped with the right knowledge to make better choices to restore good health to our bodies.
